The Wisdom Story

Having recently resigned as President of United Dialysis Corporation, I was sitting in my study reflecting upon my total loss of income and worrying about how I would now support my wife and five young children, the oldest of which was ready to enter high school. The phone rang. It was an acquaintance, whom we will call E.T., whom I had just met inviting me to his home. He wanted me to meet a young man who had just returned from Paraguay where he had served as a Peace Corps worker.

During our conversation that evening, the young man, whom we will call K.H., began to make what I then considered to be an outrageously ridiculous statement. He said that the Guarani Indians of Paraguay had a combination of three herbs that they used to prepare a tea that would "cure the flu or a cold in one day." With the arrogance that comes only from 16 years in the medical world, I responded, "That’s absurd! Herbal remedies are nothing but quackery and the result of ignorance among uneducated people." He persisted and I resisted. Finally, in desperation he opened a small cellophane bag and put a small green leaf in his mouth. Our mutual friend followed his lead but being highly suspicious of what that leaf was, I refused the offer with, "No thanks, I don’t put strange leaves in my mouth."

Together, they finally overcame my objections insisting that the leaf was neither a drug nor harmful. At length I put a leaf to my lips and gingerly tasted it. It was sweet and delicious.
