Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is an anti-oxidant that is necessary for tissue growth and repair, helps maintain healthy gums, and is required for adrenal gland function. Vitamin C aids in the metabolism of other nutrients. Recent research shows that it works together (synergistically) with Vitamin E to combat free radicals. Vitamin C prevents Scurvy. Comments.... Alcohol, steroids, antidepressants, analgesics, anticoagulants and oral contraceptives may reduce levels of Vitamin C in the body. Warnings.... Aspirin and Vitamin C taken together in large quantities may irritate the stomach. Pregnant women should consult with a physician or pharmacist prior to taking large doses of Vitamin C. Infants may become dependent on Vitamin C and develop Scurvy when they are later deprived of megadoses of Vitamin C. Be sure to speak with your pediatrician before giving large doses of Vitamin C to an infant.
