A landmark health claim pre-publication notice indicating that diets high in soy protein are related to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease has been issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The ruling takes effect October 26.

Specifically, the FDA ruling allows companies to create retail package labels explaining that, "Consuming 25 grams of soy protein a day as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease." Soy protein is one of the rare foods that has sufficient clinical data to pass the rigorous FDA approval process to support an allowed FDA health claim on product labels.
