What are Essential Fatty Acids?
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are polyunsaturated fats that are not only good for you, they are necessary for healthy body function. Like vitamins and minerals, omega-3 and omega-6 EFA's are essential nutrients, which must come from foods, or dietary supplements because the body cannot make them on its own.
If the body does not have enough EFAs to meet its needs, over time signs of deficiency may appear. In mild cases, this can be hair loss, dry skin or other skin irritations and stiff joints.
Why are EFAs Important?
EFAs are converted to substances called prostaglandins (PG), which regulate all physiological functions. Prostaglandins work like hormones to help cells maintain normal functioning. While important for proper cardiovascular, immune and nervous system function, prostaglandis are also involved in maintaining normal fat metabolism, blood pressure and clotting, joint flexibility, healthy skin and more.
Another important role of EFAs is to maintain the fluidity and integrity of cell membranes. Here they regulate the transport of nutrients and waste minerals into and out of cells.
What happens to EFAs in the body?
Once ingested, the body converts EFAs into several intermediate compounds and eventually to prostaglandins. Unfortunately, the conversion of EFAs into prostaglandins can be blocked by factors such as stress, poor diet, advanced age, alcohol and disease. If this occurs, prostaglandin levels in the body are reduced and so are their benefits.
