A woman may use as many as 11,000 tampons in her lifetime. Unknown to most women, rayon and rayon/cotton blends are widely used in the manufacture of tampons and that rayon is chlorine bleached. In the study, all-cotton tampons did not produce the dangerous TSS toxin Staphylococcus aureus, while all other varieties containing rayon amplified production of the toxin TSS-T1.
