In 1865, in Fleetwood Lancashire on the northwest coast of England, a thriving community was the center of the U.K. fishing industry. From here hundreds of fishermen departed on long fishing voyages into the hostile conditions of the North Sea and the Arctic Circle. Many of the fishermen suffered from coughs, colds and bronchial problems due to the prolonged freezing cold and damp environment.
A young pharmacist named James Lofthouse, who was a resident of Fleetwood, created a strong liquid containing menthol and eucalyptus, which helped relieve the fishermen's problems. To make it easier to carry during the rough sea voyages, Lofthouse made this liquid into small lozenges which were favored by the fishermen who soon began to refer to them as their 'Friends' and would not leave shore without them.
Visitors from badly polluted industrial areas nearby soon discovered the effectiveness of the lozenges and news spread throughout the country. Demand for Lofthouse's Original Extra Strong lozenges began to grow.
