FAQ ON Herbs for Kids

FAQ ON Herbs for Kids

Here are answers to common questions as well as informative articles on herbal issues such as children's health, standardization, and other herbal issues.

Q Do I have to put the drops in warm water?

A No. Putting the drops in warm water is only a suggestion. Many people prefer to put the drops directly in the mouth or in diluted organic fruit juice. The best way to administer Herbs for Kids products depends on the individual. There is no wrong way.

Q Is it safe to use several Herb for Kids™ products at the same time?

A Absolutely. Herbs for Kids formulas work well together. Combining formulas is a great way to tailor herbal support to children’s different needs.

Q Why don’t you list a dosage for children under 1 year of age?

A Our products are designed for children older than 1 year old because the digestive systems of infants are undeveloped and sensitive. If nursing, the mother can take the adult dose 15-30 minutes before nursing. The herbs will be present in the breast milk for up to 48 hours.

Q Can Herbs for Kids™ be used during pregnancy and lactation?

A Many mothers use some of our products throughout pregnancy and lactation. The American Herbal Products Association’s Botanical Safety Handbook suggests avoiding the following herbs that are found in Herbs for Kids products during pregnancy and/or lactation: Feverfew, Horehound, Sage, Thyme, Catnip, Oregon Grape root, Yarrow, and Licorice. Expectant mothers should read all labels carefully.

Q Why doesn’t Herbs for Kids™ flavor more blends?

A The taste of a plant is an indication of its properties: Sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes all cause a cascade of physiological responses. The bitter taste stimulates salivation in the mouth, and bile secretion from the liver. For example, when someone ingests a bitter plant, the taste of the plant will cause stimulation of the digestive system - regardless of the other properties of the plant. By not flavoring the herbs, we are keeping the taste of the herbs we use intact so that the body can respond properly to it. An exception to this is our Echinacea/Golden Root™ Blend, which we produce in natural Orange and natural Blackberry flavors.

Q Should I expect side effects from taking Herbs for Kids™ blends and extracts?

A Pharmacy terms do not translate directly to the herbal kingdom. Herbs have different ways of coming to the end result than drugs. For example: Burdock root and antihistamines are both used for allergic hives. The antihistamine works by suppressing the histamine (allergic) response. Burdock root works by helping the liver deal with the overload of toxins in the body that cause the hives. Burdock is bitter and diuretic, helping further to reduce toxins through faster elimination. The diuretic effect isn’t a side effect, it is part of how the herb achieves the end result. Herbs for Kids products are not known to cause any noticeable side effects. It is always possible to have an allergic reaction to any new substance. Note: bitter herbs stimulate bile secretions which may increase bowel movements. Glycerine in large quantities can have a laxative effect – in fact it is still sold in pharmacies as a mild laxative.

Q What is the advantage of using glycerine to make herbal extracts?

A Glycerine is an extractive agent used in pharmacy since 1846. It pulls out more water soluble constituents than grain alcohol and more alcohol soluble constituents than water. It is very stable, allowing Herbs for Kids products a three year shelf life without refrigeration. Naturally sweet, no additional sweeteners are needed. We use certified Kosher vegetable glycerine derived from coconut and/or palm kernel oils.

Q Why are glycerites better for children?

A The goal of the Herbs for Kids™ line of products is to support a child’s growing body. The majority of herbs appropriate for children are best extracted without grain alcohol, making the use of it unnecessary. For optimal results, Herbs for Kids makes its herbal extracts using a specific ratio of vegetable glycerine and distilled water.

Q Can these products be used at the same time as pharmaceutical medication?

A New pharmaceutical drugs are introduced all the time. It is impossible to know for sure how whole plant herbal extracts (which are time tested) will interact with drugs. Consult your doctor, Physicians Desk Reference (PDR), or pharmacist, and for best results AVOID STANDARDIZED EXTRACTS for children. For the above reasons Herbs for Kids cannot say whether or not it is safe to combine herbs with pharmaceutical drugs. However, many of the herbs we use in our products are common cooking herbs (thyme, lemongrass, ginger, etc) and are used daily with pharmaceutical drugs. Some things to consider before deciding to combine Herbs for Kids and pharmaceutical drugs: • Are you duplicating the desired effect? • Do you know the side effects of the prescription drug? Note: Herbalist Michael Moore teaches that Oregon Grape root speeds up the liver’s rate of metabolism of drugs. Although there are no clinical trials proving this, it may be best to avoid combining Oregon Grape root and pharmaceutical drugs.

Q How long will it take to see results from these products?

A It depends on the blend, child and situation. With blends like Minty Ginger or Echinacea/Eyebright kids could experience results in minutes. But with many of our products the effects are not so obvious. Herbs should not be confused with pharmaceutical drugs. While many drugs work immediately by suppressing a symptom, herbs work to support the body – a more subtle, nurturing process.

Q For how long should I give the product to my child?

A It depends on the state of one’s health and on the formula. A very healthy child can stop when they no longer need extra support. Some children need extra support to build up a depleted system.

Q Can adults take Herbs for Kids™?

A Definitely. Many adults use our products effectively. Herbs for Kids products are not diluted. They are full strength extracts of herbs that are safe for use with children. We put dosages for ages one to adult on every bottle.

Q Why doesn’t Herbs for Kids™ make a parasite formula?

A The presence of parasites mandates working with a skilled practitioner. There are many kinds of parasites; some are easier to treat than others. The herbs that are effective for parasites are harsh, often dangerous, and usually inappropriate for children. Parents need to consult their health care practitioner to get a positive diagnosis and treatment plan. After using the prescribed herbs or medication and receiving the ‘all clear’, work to rebuild the digestive tract with a digestive system support blend and good food.

Q Why don’t the labels say what the product is for?

A Herbal companies in the United States are under strong constraints regarding making medical claims about their products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies herbal extracts as dietary supplements. Exciting new legislation allows manufacturers to legally state which bodily structure and/or function each blend supports. In order to be in compliance with the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) labels can legally include information about supporting the healthy body, but cannot make claims about healing or curing an ill body. In accordance with the DSHEA, our labels include informative subtitles and structure/function statements.

Q Is it true the herb industry is totally unregulated?

A This is false. The dietary supplement industry is indeed under the governance of the FDA. Herbs for Kids follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). We have dozens of quality control steps within our Standard Operating Procedures. We are inspected regularly by the Montana State Health Department, working for the FDA.
