(Rhamnus purshiana), sacred bark, (a translation of the Spanish name ?cascara sagrada?), bearberry-tree, bearwood, Persiana bark. This indigenous tree occurs on the sides and bottoms of canyons from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

Cascara is a aperient, a laxative which worked gently and without griping or irritation to produce easier evacuation and normal stool function. It acts specifically upon the large intestines, which gives it its importance in the lower bowel formula. Dr. christopher recommended it for cases of long-standing constipation, used in small doses over a long period of time. Even if an immediate effect does not take place, eventually the Cascara will tone and strengthen the bowel and effect normal function. Therefore, if you are looking for a strong, one- time laxative, choose Turkey rhubarb or some other cathartic, instead of Cascara Sagrada.

Cascara acts wonderfully to tone the entire alimentary canal, increasing the secretions of the stomach, liver, pancreas and lower bowels. It is also most beneficial to the gall ducts, and relieves liver complaints, especially enlarged liver.
