Calcium is an essential part of strong bones, teeth and healthy gums. It is an important part of regular heartbeat maintenance and transmission of nerve impulses. It is needed for the prevention of muscle cramps as well as muscular growth and contraction. Calcium helps to protect the bones and teeth from lead by inhibiting absorption of the toxic metal. Comments.... Menopausal women and female athletes require greater amounts of calcium than other women. Heavy exercise hinders calcium uptake, but moderate exercise helps to promote it. Calcium supplements are most effective when taken in smaller doses throughout the day and before bed. Insufficient vitamin D intake or excessive amounts of phosphorous and magnesium hinder the uptake of calcium. Warnings.... Calcium may interfere with the effects of verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, Verelan). People with a history of kidney problems or kidney stones should not take calcium supplements. If in doubt, be sure to consult with a physician or pharmacist prior to taking Vitamin A. A little about Magnesium.... Magnesium is a catalyst in enzyme activity. It is especially essential to the enzymes involved in energy production. It aids in calcium and potassium uptake. Magnesium is needed to prevent the calcification of soft tissue. Along with vitamin B6 it helps to reduce and dissolve kidney stones. Comments.... Alcohol, diuretics, diarrhea, the presence of fluoride, and high levels of zinc and vitamin D all increase the body's need for magnesium. A high fat diet decreases magnesium absorption.
