|  |  Arrowhead Mills In the southwest corner of the United States heartland is the Texas Panhandle, and in the southwest corner of the Texas Panhandle lies Deaf Smith County. And in the middle of Deaf Smith County is Hereford, TX. It was here in 1960 that founder Frank Ford founded Arrowhead Mills in an old tin roofed building that housed a stone mill, and used an old rail car for an office. The company name came from the arrowheads he found on the property.
Company Founded 1960: Committed to his views, in 1960, Frank put down his life savings on a tractor and set out to farm corn and wheat on dry (non-irrigated) land. To process the grain "naturally", he, along with two partners, founded Arrowhead Mills. He set up a stone mill, ground his wheat, and delivered it to local stores from the back of his pickup truck. Bakeries were his major customers. He delivered 2 and 5 pound bags of stone-ground whole wheat flour and corn meal to them. It took seven years for the company to turn a profit.
From these humble beginnings, the "organic" movement started. During the 60s, Frank became the most famous farmer in America. His quaint little mill and his little company were legendary among the Haight-Ashbury radicals who sought harmony with nature and a "natural" lifestyle. Health stores from Boston to San Francisco ordered stock from Frank, who was increasingly in demand as a speaker on college campuses. He eagerly spread the word on natural and organic farming.
In 1970 for its 10 year anniversary, Arrowhead Mills secured enough funds to build the facility at its present location in Hereford.
Over the next 20 years, additional lines of beans, seeds, cereals, mixes and nut butters were added to the line.
Continued Growth in the 90s
By 1990, Frank's vision for organic agriculture had been realized and the company stood on a 20-acre site with office, manufacturing, lab, warehouse, and grain storage facilities, and a workforce of about 80 employees. The product line that started with just 2 products in 2 pack sizes, now had over 220 SKUs.
R&D talent was hired and our signature brands of flaked cereals came to be: Kamut flakes, Spelt flakes, Amaranth flakes, and Multigrain flakes. Puffed Cereals and Shredded Wheat were also added to the line.
We were shipping over 20 million pounds of food per year�over 80% certified organically grown. Arrowhead Mills was the number the Number One U.S. supplier of Certified Organic Foods! Arrowhead Mills is America's Organic Company�.
Arrowhead Mills was one of the leaders in the movement to say that a food was not organic until it had been Certified Organic by an officially recognized third party certification organization. And Certified Organic is now the official law of the land with the implementation of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) in 2002.
Arrowhead Mills Today
In 1999, Arrowhead Mills was purchased by The Hain Celestial Group, one of the largest natural and organic food companies in the United States. Today Arrowhead Mills still purchases many of its ingredients locally from its original suppliers, and its product line is over 87% organic. As we move into the 21st Century we will continue to market products that are true to our heritage and organic roots.
