Aloe Vera When you think of aloe vera, the ability to heal scrapes, cuts, and reduce skin irritations come to mind. Truth be told, aloe vera has enjoyed medicinal use for centuries dating back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. When examined, Aloe Vera is a venerable cornucopia of vitamins (B-1, B-2, B-6, C, folic acid), minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, sodium, chromium), carbohydrates (mucopolysaccharides and bulk acetylated mannans), and protein (7 amino acids). Aloe barbadensis is part of the Liliaceae family and comes in two medicinal extracts. The first is Aloe Vera Gel (AVG) which is the mucilage found inside the parenchymal tissue at the center of the leaf. The second extract is Aloe Vera Leaf (AVL) that comes in the form of a bitter yellow latex or juice and can be found under the plant’s skin surface. Of the two extracts, AVG is the extract that has made aloe vera’s medicinal properties famous while AVL is dried and distributed as a laxative. When discussing aloe vera’s medicinal uses, two new developments have shown aloe vera to slow the aging process while increasing absorption of fat- and water-soluble vitamins. The glycoprotein fraction in aloe vera exhibited free radical scavenging activity against superoxide anion, a potent oxidant, while exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties through its inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 and reduction of thromboxane A2 (1). Finally, a study done by the International Aloe Science Council showed aloe vera to improve the bioavailability of Vitamins C and E (4). A note of caution when buying Aloe Vera is to look at the ingredients. If the first or second ingredient is not AVG, or the bottle claims to be an "extract" or "reconstituted," the product most likely contains a minimal amount of aloe.
